VC investment surged in Q2: report

The global economy may be facing strong headwinds, but in the second quarter of 2012, technology entrepreneurs in the United States probably didn't notice.

According to CB Insights, Q2 2012 was the biggest quarter for VC investment in the U.S. in more than a decade, and a record-breaking one too.

The new web bubble

Yesterday, AllThingsDigital reported that Twitter has raised a huge $200m round of funding lead by top-tier VC firm Kleiner Perkins. The funding round apparently values Twitter at a whopping $3.7bn.

Earlier this month, group buying leader Groupon reportedly turned down a massive acquisition offer from Google. And on an almost weekly basis now, we learn that investors on secondary markets are pushing the value of Facebook pre-IPO stock up; the world's largest social network is, to investors buying shares on the secondary market, now worth approximately $50bn.

Google to gamers: come out and play?

Google is the 800 pound gorilla of the internet, but despite its prominence, it doesn't have a large footprint in some of the internet's most lucrative emerging markets, such as online gaming. But it might be looking to change that.

On Saturday, TechCrunch's Michael Arrington reported that Google has "secretly invested" $100m to $200m in Zynga, the maker of some of the internet's most popular social games, including Farmville and Mafia Wars. According to Arrington, the investment is related to a new product Google is creating with Zynga's help: Google Games.
