Simple Twitter experiments to restore that boxfresh feeling

There is nothing sadder than reflecting on the earlier days of a community or service and complaining about how much things have changed.

So let’s just take it for granted that there’s an element of that in this but not dwell too much. 

Instead, I’d like to focus on something more important: how you shake things up when the timeline that used to delight and inform you begins to feel saggy and boring.

Think of it like marriage-counselling for a tool that many of us spend more time with than our significant others.

Email reputation: what is the expiration date of your opt-ins? Assuming that you’re an email marketer with a conscience (and that knows a little about deliverability) you only send emails to people that opted in.

Maybe you even chose to go with a double opt-in system, to be 100% sure that your recipients are actually interested in your emails.

But although you are now complying to the email marketing legislation, these efforts aren’t enough to prevent that you’ll be regarded as a spammer.

An opt-in’s sustainability isn’t endless. Think about your email reputation and ask your recipients to prolong their subscriptions from time to time.

Women write about PR too: some of the UK's top female bloggers

Yesterday, PR agency 10Yetis put together an updated list of the top 20 most influential UK PR bloggers, according to the Advertising Age Power 150 blogs list. 

‘Head Yeti’ Andy Barr noted that recently there’s been a shuffle in response to a new ranking algorithm, and that there are far more British entries from a broader spread of companies that include SEO and PR, advertising and 'direct response specialists'.

But I, and others, noted that there's not one woman on the list.

10 reasons why list-based posts work well online

Humans appear to be hardwired to tune into lists, judging by our Google Analytics data from 2010. Half of Econsultancy's most popular 25 posts were lists, including nine out of the top 10.

I don’t subscribe to the idea that lists are somehow inferior to articles with lots of dense multi-idea paragraphs. Either the content is good, or it’s not. The list format is precisely that: a format, a simple framework for communicating ideas.

So here, in no particular order, are 10 reasons why readers and publishers love lists, and why they work so well online... and yes, my tongue is firmly planted in my cheek as I'm writing this.

Twitter introduces Lists. Will this make people actually use Twitter?

In the endlessly self-referential world of Twitter, the company made its own headlines today with the rollout of Twitter Lists. The microblogging service has now enabled about 50% of Twitter accounts with the functionality, which is slowly trending on the site.

Twitterers, blogs and news sites are atwitter with the news, but in order for Lists to serve its purpose, it needs to bring in more users and get current followers more addicted to tweeting. Can functionality like Lists turn the tide for Twitter?

The 25 factors behind brilliant brand / domain names

Last night I calculated that I have spent somewhere in the region of three days brainstorming a domain name for a new web venture. It shouldn’t be this difficult, but it feels like it is something approaching rocket science!


There are two major reasons for this. 

Firstly, there is a scarcity of ‘good’ domain names that are available. This typically reduces all of your obvious / immediate options, and leads you into a world of pain.

Secondly, and even more importantly, the domain name is also the brand name (or should be) and as such there are plenty of other considerations to factor in. 

So what I’ve done, partly to restore some sanity to the situation (I’m still undecided on my final choices) is to create a checklist of factors that should be taken into account.

26 inspiring resources for typography junkies

As a boy I used to love two types of shops: toy stores, especially those with vast stocks of Lego, and stationery retailers, in which I could lose myself for hours. The latter remains a weird affliction that I don’t yet know the name for.

While I’m not a designer by trade I’ve always loved a good font and appreciate great typography. In an online environment it is often the difference between a good site and a great site, since it is a major part of a website’s visual appeal.

Some say that web design is 95% typography. I’m not sure I’d go quite that far, but I do believe that it can help improve the user experience, that it can help persuade visitors to interact and take action, and that as such you should ask yourself whether your site needs a makeover in this department?

I’ve been working on a new website and have done a lot of research in this area. It is so hard to get wrong, and I’m not yet sure that I’ll get it right, but I’ve collated this list from a bunch of my recent bookmarks and thought it would be a good idea to aggregate and share them.
