Mobile commerce: best practice tips

Mobile commerce is still in its early stages and, while there are very few m-commerce sites in the UK, 5% of the Top 500 US online retailers have them, with more on the way

Translating the desktop shopping experience to mobiles isn't easy, and keeping it simple and usable is important for users with small screens and often slow internet connections.

With this in mind, I've come up with a few best practice tips for mobile commerce based on the sites I have seen...

Mobile app review: ShopStyle for iPhone

Shopping aggregator site ShopStyle has launched a iPhone app which allows users to buy fashion items from a range of retailers, including John Lewis, Net-A-Porter and others.

The ShopStyle app, launched this week, lets you browse through 4,000 brands, and then either email links to purchase later, or buy straight from the phone.

Ocado launches iPhone shopping app

Online grocery retailer Ocado has just launched an iPhone app for customers to create shopping lists and order groceries, which makes it the first online supermarket to move into mobile commerce.

Burger King launches mobile commerce app

It's currently covering just the Queens area of New York, but Burger King has started to trial a mobile commerce app for the iPhone, as a way of maximising orders.

Customers can use the app to order and pay for their meals and skip queues at their local Burger King. I've been pretending to be in Queens so I can try the app out....

Travelodge launches iPhone booking service

Budget hotel chain Travelodge has just released a handy iPhone app that locates nearby hotels, allowing users to make a reservation. 

The iBooker app can be downloaded free of charge from the app store, and makes good use of the phone's GPS functions.

Mobile internet stats round up

Research firm comScore released some stats on iPhone usage in the UK this week, finding that 93% of iPhone owners accessed mobile media in January, much higher than the average for smartphones.

I've come across a few other stats on mobile internet usage and mobile commerce recently, so I've rounded some of them up to coincide with the release of the latest version of our Internet Statistics Compendium.
