KLM: We make €25m per year from social media

When trying to improve your digital marketing skills it’s advisable to learn from the best in the business.

In social media that means taking a lesson from KLM, an airline that can achieves €25m in social sales each year.

At Econsultancy’s Festival of Marketing today KLM’s social media manager Karlijn Vogel-Meijer gave an insight into the company’s strategy, which is built around a laser focus on the customer experience.

The talk kicked off with a reminder of a very important rule for social marketers: you’re a guest at someone else’s party.

How are automotive brands using social for sales?

Social media is still growing rapidly. I’m pointing out the obvious here but social networks are a dynamic medium for entertainment and interaction, including content discovery and product recommendation.

As such, the auto industry seems almost uniquely suited to social.

While most consumers buy cars infrequently, their interest in them (based on price tag, necessity and if you indulge me, the embodiment of the American dream) often transcends the purchase event.

As such, social analytics has cause to mature in the automotive industry, where it surely stands to play a part in the sales funnel other than simply branding.

I’ve been reading a nice little CMO Council report on social analytics in the auto industry. Here are some thoughts on integrating social into automotive sales.

Start Me Up! A profile of Addvocate, optimising employee social media

We know the benefits of enabling all employees to use social media. Sales, service and just seeming human becomes a lot easier. Giving employees this freedom is easy in some organisations, generally small ones with a well-trained staff.

There are, however, inherent risks. If an employee goes rogue and damages your brand, it can be difficult to react quickly and avert loss of sales or sentiment.

It can also be difficult to easily track the impact of your employees' activity, and provide them with the best content to spread.

Addvocate is a platform designed to get rid of this tension, by offering guidance, daily messages and alerts, as well as analytics and optimisation.

We spoke to CEO and Founder Marcus Nelson…

£3bn of retail sales will be influenced by social media: eBay

UK retail sales directly through social media are forecast to grow to £290m by 2014 from £210m.

The study, commissioned by eBay, also predicts that £3bn of retail sales will be influenced by social media by 2014.

The increase is expected to be driven by retailers targeting consumers with personalised offers and deals on social networks.

Nearly half (46%) of social media users are already using social platforms while thinking about making a purchase, and 40% of users are actively deciding what to buy based on what they have seen on social media platforms, including reviews and recommendations, and this is only set to grow.
