Last year I analysed whether the industry claim that 2011 would be the 'year of the mobile (device)' was correct.
It seemed those clever industry commentators got it right on that occasion.
This year we've stepped it up a notch, got more specific and it's time to examine whether or not 2012 really was the 'year of the tablet'.
Mobile is changing our behaviour. And the message from a recent mobile marketing event, hosted by ORM London was, adapt to this change or be left behind.
The headline figures: who owns a smartphone (currently 54% of the UK), tablet (21% of the UK) and what they do on these devices (28% surf the net) changes from week to week. The latest in this rapid stream of stats is that more smartphone devices are being activated everyday worldwide than babies being born.
Mobile usage is big and it’s set to be even bigger. Twitter's latest report highlights how smartphone and tablet users are the most engaged consumers. Mobile users are 96% more likely to follow 11 or more brands and 58% more likely to recall seeing an ad on Twitter.
Google even predicts in three years mobile will overtake desktop as the most common way to go online – making mobile marketing more important.
In ecommerce, tablets are now finally being recognised as an entirely distinct category than smartphones, so the overarching mobile category is no longer relevant.
As such, businesses can’t rely on having a single mobile strategy to cover both devices. Tablet shoppers can expect to be treated to an excellent user experience that fits with the capabilities of their device.

Mobile devices achieve higher click-through rates than desktops when it comes to UK paid search ads, according to a report from Marin Software.
The data looks at how different devices performed during 2012, with smartphones achieving the highest CTR at 5.87%, compared to 3.93% on tablet and 2.29% on desktop.
And though the same is true of the Eurozone, the difference is less pronounced – smartphones achieved a CTR of 4.78%, compared to 4.48% on tablet and 3.1% on desktop.
The findings come from Marin's new report that looks at how smartphones and tablets are changing paid search.
For many years since its release, the Android OS has been behaving like a teenager in the grip of raging hormones. Growth has been nothing short of explosive and the changes have been sweeping and profound.

Christmas might seem like a distant memory now, but as we've seen from the recent troubles at Comet, HMV and Blockbuster, having a good Christmas can be the difference between success and failure for a retailer.
But what's coming to light from our search data is how Christmas Day itself is becoming critically important for online retailers.
We have seen a steady growth in e-retail on Christmas Day and Boxing Day over the last five years or so, and now with the proliferation of tablets and other smart devices we’re seeing the growth increase even further.
Nearly a quarter (24%) of UK consumers used a mobile device for Christmas shopping, according to stats included in our new Christmas 2012 Online Shopping Survey.
The report, which was produced using Toluna QuickSurveys, polled 1,000 UK and 1,000 US online consumers on their shopping habits.
It revealed that 11% of UK respondents used a smartphone and 13% used a tablet, compared to 77% who shopped using a desktop.
US shoppers exhibited largely similar shopping behaviours, though overall were 4% more likely to use a smartphone or tablet for their Christmas shopping.
With Christmas behind us once more, it was unsurprising to many that smartphones and tablets played an even bigger part in our holiday shopping activities than they have done in the past.
