LEGO: putting community first with five inspiring social campaigns

LEGO makes for a brilliant and satisfying case study for hundreds of reasons. 

It helps that it’s one of the most beloved brands on the planet, appealing across generations and ages. It constantly remains relevant by aligning itself with quality licenses and innovations, whilst staying true to its own brand identity. 

It also has achieved content marketing triumphs that most other brands would kill for and a social strategy that puts the majority of its focus on community engagement.

Therefore it’s great idea to check in with the company on a regular basis to see what it’s been doing on its digital channels, to offer inspiration for your own endeavours.

11 spectacular ways the internet helped kill time this week

Despite last week's machinations, I've given up on trying to keep this weekly round-up of amusing internet things 'evergreen'. 

So prepare for a topical assault of Flappy Bird, Sochi, Valentine's Day, The Lego Movie and flood misery, rendering the future readability of this article as redundant and confusing as a two year-old repeat of Have I Got New For You.

What is scarcity marketing and should you use it?

As a relative newcomer to the digital marketing world, I've decided to write a series of 'beginner's guides' to uncover what is meant by certain terms, trends and technological advances in digital; being both a travel guide and a personal investigation.

Here I’ll be answering the following questions: What is scarcity? Why should you use it? Are there good and bad practices? In a tone of voice that has been described as both 'helpful' and 'not too rambling'.

Scarcity in marketing means to use the fear of shortage to sell more

It’s a fairly simple psychological premise. “We don’t have many Furbies left I’m afraid, you’ll have to buy it now if you don’t want to ruin your child’s Christmas” is the simplest and most extreme example.

However if we think of scarcity in terms of providing transparency about how much stock is left of a particular item, then it’s a very helpful, positive tool. 

Scarcity can also increase the perceived value of the item or service you’re providing. 

Your products can become that much more precious in the eyes of a customer. The fear that there is only a limited supply will make the customer purchase faster and possibly with less thought.

Which leads to the argument that scarcity can also be manipulative and in some circumstances, exploitative.

Before we get to the more frustrating end of scarcity, let’s take a look at some of the positive uses.

As the cinema experience continues to improve with technological advancements in Imax, 3D and fully immersive sound, so too does the aesthetic experience of the web with its glorious HTML5, parallax scrolling and super-slick CSS3 coding.

It's as if they're competing directly for our attention!

Thankfully the home experience will never match the cinema experience no matter how cutting edge your home cinema set-up may be. 

Just think of the sheer visceral horror of watching Sandra Bullock spinning out of control in the depths of space and how muted it will seem while watching it in bed on your tablet.

These films still need to be marketed through these less than cinematic desktops and portable devices in order to drag us out of our homes and into the theatres.

Luckily the fast pace of change in web design trends has meant that the large scale experience of cinema can be substituted online in brilliant alternative and innovative ways.

Here is a list of movie websites that either feature captivating visuals, grand technological achievements, innovative UX or highly interactive fun, whilst also perfectly capturing the essence of the movie online.

The LEGO Movie: content marketing triumph or 100 minute advert?

You really don’t need me to tell you that there’s a LEGO movie out right now. It’s impossible to ignore.

Heck, even as I write this there’s a Culture Show special on BBC2 right now about how LEGO has influenced architecture. Funnily enough, when constructing our house, the builders ran out of red bricks halfway up and had to finish with yellows and greens.

Warner Bros. began the marketing push seven months ago in June 2013 with a rapturously received teaser trailer and continued with a solid social marketing strategy, which saw very close engagement on social channels that continues through to this week of release.

ITV even turned over an entire advert break during its Sunday night edition of Dancing on Ice to LEGO, during which adverts from BT, Confused.com and Premier Inn were remade with LEGO models.
