Ebay becomes latest ecommerce brand to offer visual search

Ecommerce pioneer eBay doesn't make headlines nearly as often as peers like Amazon, which appears well on its way to taking over the world, but that doesn't mean that eBay isn't trying to rekindle growth through innovation.

Case in point: on Wednesday, the company, which had already applied visual search to its Motors app, announced broad new image recognition features for its mobile apps which allow users to "use pictures instead of words to search eBay's 1.1 billion listings."

Mobile is a key area of focus for ASOS.

It's not hard to see why - 80% of traffic to its website and 70% of orders in the UK come from mobile devices, and users reportedly spend an average of 80 minutes in the app each month.

How visual search is helping ecommerce brands

It’s a hard thing for a writer to admit, but sometimes, it can be downright tricky to find the right words. When it comes to searching for products online, it’s usually much easier to imagine what you want than describe it.

Luckily, visual search is helping to change this, making it much easier for consumers to find exactly what it is they’re looking for.

Start Me Up! A profile of WeSEE

In the UK search is a one-man show, with Google hoovering up around 90% of the market while Bing and Yahoo battle it out for the rest.

App review: WINEfindr

WINEfindr is, according to the App Store description, the world's first visual search enabled price comparison wine app.'

I noticed this app in the 'featured' section of the App Store, and as someone who likes a glass of wine or two, I downloaded it. However, for me, it didn't really delver on this promise.

App review: Tesco Wine Finder for iPhone

Tesco's R&D team has been busy lately; after introducing a store finder app last month, Tesco has now launched a visual search app for wine discovery.

The Wine Finder app (iTunes link) allows users to take a picture of a bottle of wine and find related results from Tesco's range, and see price and other information about the bottle.

Microsoft's new 'visual search' is good for advertisers

Microsoft Corp. is testing out a new way to search select topics by retreiving visual results instead of text.  A list of about 50 popular categories now return image results.

From The AP:

"Bing's new visual search page lets people flip through pictures to track down where and when a popular movie is playing, read up on baseball players or shop for items like digital cameras."

At launch, the visual search option only works on a few topics, but it's a great move for brands. For starters, the new search option is designed with advertisers in mind.
