The Slingbox Q&A - shaking up the TV industry with technology

Launched six months ago in the UK, Sling Media’s ‘place-shifting’ devices have shaken up the TV value chain to such an extent that broadcasters, ISPs and mobile operators are all seeking deals with the firm.

They use a disruptive technology that allows people to watch TV content remotely from PCs, laptops or mobiles.

Video-sharing website Travelistic launches for travellers

Internet startup Travelistic.com - which aims to be the YouTube for travellers - launched yesterday, headed up by one-time CEO and president of MTVi. 

Travelistic launches 'YouTube for travellers'

Travelistic combines user-generated video with professionally produced programming, some of which is exclusive. The self-funded company itself plans to move into content creation, with a travel-themed 'video podcast' in the offing.

Diversion Media built the website using Ruby on Rails, harnessing the Google Maps API in the process to make it easy for users to browse videos by location, in a visual way. Users can also search for videos by tags.

All in all it looks pretty good. We spoke to CEO Nicholas Butterworth to find out a bit more...

OpenStreetMap lands first commercial partner

OpenStreetMap (OSM), the open source mapping project, has secured its first commercial partner by linking up with property search engine Nestoria.

The move will see Nestoria displaying OSM’s user generated maps alongside its property listings – a boost for the project as it seeks to gain popularity among third-party developers.

Google News adds blog searches

Google has given a boost to the blogging community by highlighting its blog search service on Google News.

The move, which took place over the weekend, has seen links to the one year old service added to the front page of Google News and at the end of search results.

Amazon launches new question and answer site

Amazon is about to enter into competition with the likes of Yahoo! Answers and Microsoft Q&A with the launch of a new site, Askville, which allows users to have their queries answered by other community members.

The site is still at the testing stage at the moment, and participation is currently by invitation only, as well as only being available in the US and Canada.

Fresh back from a trip to Greenland, Torsten Jacobi answers some questions about his fast-growing blog network, Creative Weblogging.

The firm, which aggregates over 80 blogs, was founded in Hamburg in January 2004 by Torsten and Raik Hoffmann, and is now based in Palo Alto, California.

Second Life users pass million mark

Linden Lab’s web-based virtual world Second Life has signed up its millionth customer.

The game's homepage said it had just under 1.03m residents at the time of writing, having had 0.96m yesterday, according to CNET.

Top UK blogs, ranked by unique users and impressions

Last Friday I wrote a post called “Are inbound links the best way to measure a blog’s influence?”, where I challenged a study published by Edelman and Technorati.

That study ranked the top blogs in the UK by influence, but rankings were determined solely by links from other blogs. My big issue is that the quantity of links doesn’t tell you very much, not when many blogs listed in Technorati are spam blogs. 

In any case, I don’t believe that PR professionals or media planners would subscribe to this link-based methodology to measure influence (or very much else for that matter).

So I promised a closer look at the top blogs in the UK, ranked by a more suitable metrics: unique users and page impressions.

Universal sues video sharing sites over copyright infringement

The predicted backlash against the infringement of copyright by video sharing sites has begun, with Universal Music launching legal action in the US against both Grouper.com and Bolt.com.

Universal, whose artists include U2 and Mariah Carey, is seeking compensation of up to $150,000 for each incident of copyright infringement, as well as demanding that the sites cease using their content.
