Could 2010 be the year of the Google phone? Google has taken a different approach from smartphone competitor Apple. Rather than cornering the market with one killer product launch per year, the search giant has proliferated multiple handsets with different feature sets and price ranges. And the strategy appears to be paying off.
According to comScore, Android phones grew 45% in marketshare from February to March this year. What’s more, Android is the only major smartphone growing its share of the mobile market. Google may have Steve Jobs to thank for that.
According to comScore, 234 million Americans over 13-years old used mobile devices between February and May. During that time, the Android platform grew its marketshare an impressive 45%, from 9% of the total U.S. smartphone market to 13%.
They took that growth at the expense of other phone makers. Overall, the smartphone market grew 8.1% according to comScore. But Android smartphones were the only major phone device to see a gain in market share for the three month period.
However, Google’s smartphone is still far behind Apple, which still handles an impressive 24.4% of the smartphone market. Apple’s share shrank 1% over this period. Much of that is attributable to the launch of iPhone 4.
Going forward, it will be interesting to see if Apple users finally start to tire of Apple’s approach to product design. There has definitely been a lot of griping online after Apple ran short of stock for its latest launch. People wanting to purchase the iPhone are still in the strange commercial situation of not being able to give the company their money.

To date, Apple has made no moves to actually fix the glitch that makes this happen.
And there are other ways that Apple has turned off consumers. It’s been over three years since the iPhone debut, and people waiting for the iPhone to break its
exclusivity contract with AT&T before they bite the bullet have gone elsewhere to purchase mobile devices. If they were holding their breath,
they’d be dead by now.
As other smartphone makers iterate their devices with new features, the Jesus Phone is losing some of its cache. Of course, the latest iPhone launch exceeded sales expectations for Apple, but it will be interesting to see if the multiple irritants that Apple has gotten away with for so long start to finally send customers elsewhere.
