Social platforms, though reasonably new, have greatly changed the digital advertising landscape. Facebook was founded in 2004, and by 2005 had launched its first ad. It was not until 2012, the same year that it bought Instagram, that it ran its first mobile ad.
Twitter was founded in 2006, and by 2010 had launched Promoted Tweets and Promoted Accounts. Snap is the most recent entrant, having been founded in 2011 and launching its first ad in 2014, while LinkedIn is one of the oldest social networks having been founded in 2003 and launching its first ad in 2006.
Although most of these platforms have subtly changed since their launches, experimenting with new features, much about paid social advertising has stayed the same. Contextual ads in the users’ feed remain the bread and butter of social advertising.
