Having gathered together some recent mobile internet stats in a post last week, I’ve found some stats on online retail from the past month or so.
Here is a selection of recent e-commerce related statistics, along with a few thrown in from our most recent Internet Statistics Compendium…
UK online sales (from IMRG)
- UK shoppers spent £3.8bn online in August 2009, 16% higher than the same month in 2008, though down 10% on July’s figures. Online retail sales in the UK were worth £43.8bn in 2008.
Individual retailers’ online sales figures
- The Book Depository impressive growth continues, with turnover for the year ending June 2009 totalling £61.5m. This is an increase of 51% on last year’s £40m. (via Internet Retailing)
- Sales at fashion etailer ASOS rose by 47% in the six months up to the end of September. Sales for the year ended 31 March 2009 totalled £165m. (ASOS AGM statement)
- Online sales at M&S rose by 30% in the 13 weeks to 26 September. Total M&S Direct sales were £324.4m in the year to March 2009. (Trading statement)
- In the 26 weeks to August 1 2009, online sales at John Lewis rose by 11.6% to reach £151.5m. (John Lewis interim statement)
US online sales (comScore)
- Online retail sales in the United States were worth $30.2bn in Q2 2009, down 1% on the same period in 2008, only the second quarter on record where e-commerce spending has been lower than the previous year.
- The fastest-growing product category was Toys &
Hobbies (21% growth), followed by Books & Magazines (up
17%), and Video Games, Consoles & Accessories (15%).
Other e-commerce stats
- Consumers are most attracted to a website that provides good advice and reassurance about their purchase, with outfit suggestions (43%), recommendations (46%) and customer reviews (40%) cited as features that consumers most like. [IMRG)
- Confidence in online retail seems to be higher than the rest of Europe, with half of Eurpeans saying they would not spend more than €50 at a time
online, while one in 14 UK respondents would spend £5,000 or more. The biggest frustration with online retail across Europe was a lack of customer service. (ATG via Internet Retailing)
- Halfords recently passed the milestone of 1m reservations for instore purchase via its Reserve and Collect service. The service has helped the retailer to grow its multichannel revenues by 90% in the 12 months to April 2009.
