A survey by the Email Sender and Provider Coalition (ESPC), an anti-spam organisation, has shown that US email users are increasingly savvy when dealing with spam and unwanted emails.
The survey, carried out in conjunction with market research firm Ispos, polled 2,252 internet users who use AOL, MSN/Hotmail, Gmail and Yahoo for email.
According to the survey, customers are more aware of the ‘unsubscribe’ and ‘report spam’ functions, with 80% of respondents using these tools to manage their inboxes.
Email users’ wishlists include a desire for greater support from ISPs, email providers and marketers so they can control their inboxes more effectively. They would like ‘report fraud’ and ’unsubscribe’ buttons added to their email programs.
Other findings from the poll:
- 83% have used the ‘report spam’ button.
- 80% of email users decide whether to report email as spam or hit the ‘junk’ button without opening the message.
- 82% use the unsubscribe feature to remove themselves from an email they had previously subscribed to.
- Most people think these unsubscribe links work – 71%.
- 90% wanted an ‘unsubscribe’ button built into their email service, while 80% would like a ‘report fraud’ feature.
