Last night TechCrunch Europe hosted their inaugural Europas awards, with a list highly impressive nominees and an audience of digital royalty – both start-up and established – including the Traveling Geeks who had been at Econsultancy’s roundtable event only hours before. So, what were the categories and who were the winners?

Europas awards

Without doubt, the champion of the evening was the free music service, Spotify, winning Best Web Application, The Europas Grand Prix, Best New Startup and seeing Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon scooping the Best Startup Founder (s) award.

Best Bootstrapped Startup (less than 3 years old) went to, which calls itself “a tumblelog…  a super-easy blog” that takes on hybrid stance of being a life-scrapbook and a life-streaming site.

Mendeley, the academic software management tool, won Best Social Innovation and Songkick, the online organiser for offline music took the well-deserved Best Design gong.

Best Enterprise / B2B Startup went to Huddle, the online workspace and collaboration company, and Best Entertainment Application went to SoundCloud, a music distribution platform.

In the mobile world, Best Mobile Startup was awarded to Nimbuzz, a free-calls platform, and Best Mobile Application went to Spinvox, a service that converts voicemails into SMS or emails.

Other awards of the evening included Best Cleantech / Environmental Startup (Alertme), Best European Hardware (Poken), Best Investor (The Accelerator Group) and Best Investor Personality (Yossi Vardi).

Overall, the night was vibrant and the atmosphere electric and as the drinks flowed, the friendly rivalry emerged. However, the most striking feeling about the evening was a real sense of the innovation and creativity that currently exists within the European online startup scene. This is something I’m hopeful will continue, even influencing the more established digital companies in the near future.
