The Evening Standard launched a new website this week with news, blogs and comment from the London daily.

The new site complements the more entertainment focused thisislondon website run by parent company Associated Newspapers, which has also relaunched its ESadvertising site.

It has a strong focus on user generated content and features blogs from the Standard’s journalists on a range of subjects, from news to restaurants, comedy and technology.

It also has forums for readers to discuss a range of subjects, as well as polls on the issues of the day:

In addition, readers can comment directly on any news article or column on the site, which is always a good thing for reader retention.

Unlike the recent Times and Guardian redesigns, the Standard doesn’t rely on the header to provide all the site’s navigation. While users can switch between some areas of the site using the header, to get around the news and sport stories they will need to use the right side of the page.

The Standard has created a good website though, nice and easy to use, and relatively uncluttered by advertising (just one skyscraper ad per page), with a range of ways for readers to get involved on the site.
