The Guardian’s ongoing site redesign continues this week with the launch of an all new sports section, complete with embedded video and enhanced photography.
After the last update to the Guardian’s news service in February, the sports section had been left with the old design and didn’t quite fit with the rest of the site. This has now been rectified and the new section is a massive improvement.
The site now makes good use of the vast array of sporting clips on YouTube, as well as its own video content and can now embed the clips into articles rather than just linking to them, which is preferable, as it keeps the Guardian’s users on the site:
The navigation has also been brought in line with the rest of the site, and is one of the best features of the whole website.
Every page now contains the header bar, which makes it nice and easy to switch between different parts of the site, while a breadcrumb trail is also provided to make it easier for users to retrace their steps.
Another useful addition for football fans is the club pages, which provides a dedicated page for each football club in the English leagues and SPL, as well as Spain and Italy.

The new sports section works very well, is now much more appealing visually, and now ties together much more effectively. The navigation bar at the rop of each page is excellent too, making it one of the easiest newspaper websites to navigate around.
It also manages to incorporate extra video and photographic content without affecting pageload times, something which is a big problem on the Mail’s new beta site.
In the latest ABCe figures, Guardian.co.uk remains the leader online, with 19.5m users in February, ahead of the Daily Mail on 17.9m. The Telegraph had its strongest month to date online, with 17m unique users.
