Three quarters of UK consumers don’t use their mobiles to access the web, according to research.

The survey of 1,500 people, commissioned by hosting firm Hostway, found that 38% of mobile internet users are annoyed pages load too slowly, while over 25% find sites too hard to navigate on small screens.

A quarter of those surveyed said they did not use the mobile web because sites they wanted to access were not available.

Nine out of 10, however, agreed that they would if sites displayed correctly and accessing them didn’t incur a high cost.

The study highlights the need for firms to design mobile-compatible websites, Hostway product manager Phil Turnbull told IT Week.

We’re in the dark ages compared to desktop browsing. Firms should take [the design of their mobile web sites] every bit as seriously, and because they have to be more ruthless about how the site is designed, it’s potentially a greater challenge.”
