Manchester Airport has launched a Twitter profile to provide real-time flight details to travellers.
Those who follow the airport’s feed are automatically re-followed and as such can recieve updated flight information by sending a direct message with their flight number. A message is then sent back whenever the status of their flight changes.
Twitter users can only send a direct message to another if they’re being followed by them.
The airport launched the profile as part of a summer marketing campaign. To encourage users to pass on promotions, it’s running a competition that enters all people who retweet a voucher into a prize draw. However, this is a method that has been branded as encouraging spam by some industry experts (nma 6 August 2009).
Andrew Harrison, Manchester Airport commercial director, said, “In the current economic climate people are being much more savvy about how they spend their money, but they still see their summer holiday as essential. We’ve created the retail vouchers to help our customers make their money go much further.”
