Ocado has launched another mobile app, this time a voice search app for Android phones, and the online grocer seems to be having some success with mobile commerce

Having launched an iPhone shopping app last year, this move broadens Ocado’s mobile presence, making the app available on 20 different handsets. 

The app for Android includes voice search technology, enabling users to save time spent typing search terms in, something which can be a pain on a mobile, though the success of this will depend on the accuracy of the search results. 

One interesting fact from the press release is the usage of the iPhone app since it was released in July 2009, something which may prompt other supermarkets to develop mobile commerce sites or apps, if they aren’t doing so already. 

In February this year, the iPhone app was responsible for 4.4% of all Ocado orders, a figure which would equate to £15m of sales per annum if this usage continues. 

Clearly, a significant proportion of Ocado’s customers appreciate the convenience of being able to do their grocery shopping on the move, saving time by shopping while on the train, or when they have some time to kill. 

Given the success of the iPhone It’s a smart move by Ocado to extend its reach on mobile by creating an app for other handsets, though I wonder whether a mobile website which covers all bases would be the next logical step.
