London & Boston (USA), 15 December, 2003 Cheapflights today announced it had purchased the domain name www.cheapestflights.com for an undisclosed sum from Travel Services International, Inc – part of MyTravel USA, a wholly owned subsidiary of MyTravel plc.

The domain was acquired by Cheapflights (USA) Inc. the American, Boston based, arm of Cheapflights.co.uk . Cheapflights are the leading UK independent guide to travel deals. The Cheapflights.co.uk website gives users access to some 600,000 daily updated deals on flights, holidays and short breaks by more than 500 travel trade partners, from major airlines and holiday companies to specialist travel agents. Cheapflights.com is the US travel site launched by Cheapflights in May this year which already has 240,000 deals sourced from over 40 US travel companies.

Finding cheap flights on-line can be unfeasibly confusing and time-consuming as the industry is built upon the principles of complex price differentiation, yield management, brand and sales/discounts psychology. As a result, there is no wonder-system that is able to search all the low costs, airlines, agencies, consolidators, charter flights, specialists and online agencies for availability and which then spits out the guaranteed cheapest flights. Cheapflights is aware that the cheapestflights.com domain name could seriously mislead since consumers since there is no such thing to date as the 'killer-site' that will always find you the cheapest flight. Hence, having purchased Cheapestflights.com, Cheapflights will not be rebranding the site but will use it to help educate consumers that to get the best deal you need to shop around. Cheapflights has decided to use the site using an unconventional, innovative, fun and viral approach. Click on www.cheapestflights.com to see the Internet's very first ‘Expectation Error – Cheapest Flights Not Found’ page.

“With circa 2 million unique users a month on its combined sites, Cheapflights takes its role as a consumer champion very seriously” says Hugo Burge, who as COO Cheapflights.co.uk also heads up the US operation; “We know that as a leading independent guide to travel deals, no one travel website, agency or airline can ever claim to always have the cheapest flights. This is a complete fiction and technically impossible and to claim that ability would be to seriously mislead the public. By acquiring the domain name www.cheapestflights.com we hope to use it educate web users about current limitations on search capabilities, despite the latest 'spidering' techniques, and also to halt irresponsible use of this domain by another less responsible company ”

He added, “Cheapflights.co.uk, and the US .com site, do not sell tickets but we are able to display one of, if not the broadest spectrum of deals, to help the public quickly shop around to find and compare offers from a wide range of companies who are the most likely to offer the cheapest flights”
