E-consultancy.com was last night named Online Publisher of the Year in the business category of the AOP Awards, which reward excellence in digital publishing.

E-consultancy.com, which was praised for its “strong strategic vision” and “exceptional editorial”, also scooped the 2006 Business Editorial Team award during a night which saw the publisher win both prizes it was nominated for.

E-consultancy.com, which beat off strong competition from the likes of the Financial Times, Reed Business Information, Silicon.com and Brand Republic, was commended for “providing the leading resource for training, research and events for online marketing and e-commerce in the UK.”

The judging panel added: “In the past year, the team has continued to build upon its achievements by developing a community of top digital marketing professionals, through price restructuring, providing a new range of products and services, and by reinvesting in new capabilities and content.”

The judges included Guy Phillipson, the Chief Executive of the IAB, and Simon Waldman, the AOP Chairman and the Guardian Media Group’s Director of Digital Strategy and Development.

The Online Publisher 2006 award was collected by E-consultancy.com co-founders Ashley Friedlein and Matthew O'Riordan.

Friedlein, E-consultancy.com’s CEO, said: “We are absolutely delighted with this as it is recognition for all the hard work the team has put in over the last few years. When you look at the calibre and resources of our competitors it really is a great achievement for us. But this is just the start though as we have big plans for the future.”

Friedlein also collected the Business Editorial Team Award, accompanied to the stage by E-consultancy.com editor Chris Lake.

In the Editorial Team section, the website edged out publishers including CNET Networks UK, Financial Times Business, Haymarket Brand Media, Centaur’s Mad.co.uk, and TSL Education.

The shortlist for the Business Online Publisher award included Reed Business Information, VNU Business Publications, CNET Networks and LetsRecycle.com.

The judges commented: “E-consultancy.com delivers editorial that is exceptional in both quality and quantity: an amazing achievement in itself, especially when considering the size of the editorial team. They demonstrate a clear understanding of the medium, the market, the product and the user.”

Other winners at the London Hilton awards ceremony, hosted by comedian Jimmy Carr, included Associated Northcliffe Digital for Online Publisher (Consumer) and Guardian Unlimited in the Consumer Editorial Team section for its Comment is Free blog. TopGear.com, published by BBC Worldwide, was named Consumer Website 2006.

The AOP is the UK Association of Online Publishers.
