Innovative privacy software release provides discrete, secure, anonymous surfing and data exchange for all online users via a VPN service (Virtual Private Network)

Steganos, the European leader in security and privacy software for both consumers and SMEs, has developed and launched a new service to provide any online users, at home and in HotSpots, with a unique way to anonymously surf and exchange data – Steganos Internet Anonym VPN.

Steganos Internet Anonym VPN uses a more sophisticated approach to online privacy than conventional anonymisation software. It employs VPN technology to create a secure connection between end-user PCs and the Steganos virtual private network (VPN) server. This connection ensures that all online activity is truly anonymous and SSL-encrypted.

The service works discreetly in the background, allowing users to remain anonymous for entire internet connection sessions as the only IP shown anywhere is the one of the Steganos VPN server, not the one of the user’s PC. Steganos software is quick and easy to configure and use, enabling completely normal surfing without the need for any special browser or additional software. Only a discreet icon on the task bar notifies the user of the anonymous connection to the network. All internet functions can be operated as normal. For example, browsing on the web, uploading and downloading data, using legal file sharing services, and visiting SSL protected shopping sites are all completely anonymous for both site operators and respective internet providers.

Steganos Internet Anonym VPN also provides on-the-fly secure data tunnels to ensure users being safe and anonymous when connecting through public wireless local area networks (WLANs) such as Wi-Fi hotspots. With Steganos Anonym VPN, mobile users can now use WLANs without any security or privacy qualms. The anonymous, secure connection via VPN hides all online activities from other users connected via the same WLANs or hotspot, as well as from the operators of those networks. Steganos customers can genuinely enjoy the freedom that these technological developments offer without fear of anybody eavesdropping.

How does Steganos Internet Anonym VPN work?

Steganos Internet Anonym VPN creates a tunnel between a users’ computer and one of the Steganos VPN servers, through which all on-line activities run. This tunnel secures all information running through it with an SSL connection, which is also used, for example, in on-line banking, thereby making it safe from interception, even by the customer’s service provider. Steganos servers relay the user’s requests to the web, which means users move completely anonymously on the web with any websites visited registering their IP address as that of the Steganos server.

Anonymisation takes place through the Steganos server farm. Due to the high capacity of the servers, Steganos users can surf fluidly even during periods of high traffic. Should the available servers ever not be sufficient, Steganos simply connects further servers. Steganos Internet Anonym VPN is based on Open Source technology, the second Steganos product to make use of Open Source after LockNote.

Users can install the Steganos Internet Anonym VPN service on their computer quickly and use it intuitively. The main browser window displays how many gigabytes have already been used, and as with other prepaid services, such as mobile telephones, it’s only possible to use the volume that has been paid for.
Although all VPN traffic runs through the Steganos servers, these servers do not record which sites are visited, or for how long, or what data is sent. The only thing stored is the amount of data sent and received, since that is necessary to ascertain how much monthly quota has been used up.

The advantages which Steganos VPN offers in contrast to an open VPN solution are obvious: users don’t need to rent their own server, and they don’t have to set this server or its client up. Also, in contrast to the anonymisation effect offered by the Steganos VPN service, when using their own servers, users are of course not anonymous whilst surfing the net, because it’s difficult to hide the identity of the only user on a server.

Service pricing depends on a user’s desired bandwidth. Two packages are available tailored for standard and high volume surfers. Payment is made on a yearly basis and is for a certain monthly bandwidth. A year’s Steganos Internet Anonymous VPN 300 package licence with 25 gigabytes per month is available for £54.95 (including VAT), while the Steganos Internet Anonym VPN 1000 licence offers up to 85 gigabytes per month and costs £139.95 (including VAT) a year.

Because users always have sight of their internet connection details, the volume of data used is shown on the Steganos Anonym Internet VPN main browser window. Only the quantities of data users have sent over the Steganos server are stored, with payment calculations based on this. No further data is recorded.
