The latest release of the leading encryption application enables Outlook email, calendars and contacts to be protected; increases the maximum size of each encrypted safe to 256GB and enables Apple iPods to be used as portable safes and keys.

KESTON, UK, Tuesday 19th September 2006 - Steganos, European leader in providing security and privacy software for consumers and SMEs, has launched the latest generation of its market-leading encryption application, Steganos Safe 2007. New features in Steganos Safe 2007 include the ability to use picture sequences as passwords, support for Apple iPods to be used to store encrypted data or keys, and protection of data in Microsoft Outlook. The maximum size of each safe has been quadrupled to 256GB.

Steganos Safe 2007 enables users to create any number of secure virtual drives, in which data is safely stored and encrypted. Each drive can now hold up to 256GB, providing plenty of space for film archives, photo albums, multimedia files, diaries, tax documents, emails and business reports to be protected. Users can change the size of each individual drive at any time they please. The drives can be accessed directly from within applications, through Windows Explorer and through any internet browser. Steganos Safe 2007 is compatible with previous versions of the software and can open safes created with earlier versions.

To enable the safes to be more easily identified, users can now give each safe a different colour and sort safes alphabetically, by creation date, by size or by colour code.

New: Protection of private data in Outlook Steganos Safe 2007 introduces support for Microsoft Outlook, ensuring the privacy of emails, calendar entries, notes and contacts. Numerous PST files (which contain all a user’s Outlook data, including the archive) can be locked in a safe.

New: Apple iPod support for Portable Safes Steganos Safe 2007 enables self-decrypting Portable Safes to be created and stored on CDs, DVDs, storage cards, USB keys and DVD-DL media. These safes can be opened on computers that do not have Steganos software installed, provided that the correct password is entered. New files can also be added to the safe from these machines. When the storage media is removed, the data is automatically encrypted. In this generation of the software, an Apple iPod can be used for the first time to store a Portable Safe.

New: key storage on Apple iPods
The encryption key can also be stored on an iPod (although users are advised that storage keys and encrypted data should not be stored together). The key can also be stored on digital cameras, USB keys, and ActiveSync-compatible mobile phones. When the devices are connected to the computer, the data is automatically unlocked. When the key device is removed, the data is once again encrypted.

New: visual passwords using PicPass
This latest release introduces an alternative to the traditional password in Steganos PicPass. A user can create a sequence of pictures from a databank of 36 images. This sequence is entered to unlock the data. The pictures can be set to never appear in the same place twice, so that even a mouseclick recorder cannot crack this password.

Password quality check
Thanks to the built-in multilingual dictionary, users are warned as before if their traditional text password is insecure.

New: Hotkeys for opening safes
Steganos Safe 2007 introduces hotkeys, so that safes can be opened and closed using a key combination from within applications. Each safe has its own keyboard shortcut.

Strong encryption
All Steganos encryption products use the long-established but never cracked international encryption standard AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) with 256 bit keys. This level of encryption is considered by the US National Security Agency to be of a high enough standard to protect its data classified as ‘top secret’. AES protects data in real time and enables as many encryption keys as there are atoms in the universe – a number that looks like a one with 77 zeroes after it.

New: Support for external drives in Steganos Shredder Steganos Safe 2007 includes Steganos Shredder, which destroys data irrevocably. It enables three methods to be used for destroying data: a simple overwriting, the US Department of Defense DoD5220.22-M/NISPOM 8-306 method, or the Gutmann Method using 35 rounds of overwriting. Steganos Shredder can even remove remains of files that were previously deleted using traditional methods. Users can be confident that even free disk space does not include any remains of data that could be reconstituted.

With the new version of Steganos Safe, data can now be shredded on USB keys, external drives and other external storage devices.

Additional features
Steganos Safe 2007 now supports Windows XP with 64 bit processors. As in previous versions, Steganos Safe 2007 includes Anti-Crash-Protection to ensure that data is protected even if the computer crashes. The software is supported with free automated updates within a generation of the software.

Steganos Safe 2007 replaces Steganos Safe 8, released June 2005.
