NHS Direct Online – www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk - the NHS’s main health advice and information website for patients and the public has re-launched with a fresh look and new features.

Interactive agency Cimex was commissioned by the Central Office of Information (COI) on behalf of NHS Direct, to improve the site’s look and feel and make it more user-friendly and accessible. The redesigned site incorporates new features, including:

• A ‘Mind and body’ magazine containing news and features on current health issues, and interactive health tools and quizzes.
• A new ‘feeling low’ algorithm in the self-help guide which covers common adult and child health problems.
• A new ‘body key’ index as well as an A-Z index to help navigate the health encyclopaedia of conditions and treatments.
• Improved accessibility, including the ability to change font sizes.

Ed Lester, NHS Direct Chief Executive says: “We’ve been listening to users and with their feedback have undertaken a major redesign of the site. We worked with Cimex to make the site more accessible, user-friendly and interactive for a wide range of audiences including older and disabled people and non-English speakers. The website is already incredibly popular, with more than 1.5million visits each month, but we’re re-launching this newly designed version to remind people that the website is professional, trustworthy and a really useful source of health information and advice.”

David Hockin, Cimex Corporate Director says: “The NHS is an important public service and it has been a pleasure to work with such a progressive team on this significant project.”

The NHS Direct website forms part of the NHS Direct multi-channel service, which also includes the NHS Direct telephone service and NHS Direct Interactive on digital satellite TV. Each month, more than two million people make use of these services.
