Conchango, the business, technology and interactive media expert, has created a Live Departure Board gadget for National Rail Enquiries. The tool is designed for the Windows Vista Sidebar so that users can download it to their desktop and see at a glance the status of a train or the latest timetable.

The tool utilises the existing National Rail Enquiries website infrastructure to display Live Departure Boards for any station on Britain’s rail network. At a glance it can show you times and departure points of trains throughout the United Kingdom, optionally you can filter by a particular destination. If a train is late, it will tell you what time it is expected - and if it is cancelled the departure details will turn red.

The Live Departure Board gadget was originally produced to demonstrate some of the technical capabilities of the Windows Vista Sidebar and published on the Conchango blog. After discussions with National Rail, further developments to the user experience were made in readiness for a public release.

Mike Altendorf, CEO of Conchango, comments: “The possibilities that Windows Vista holds are resulting in developers experimenting with some ground-breaking tools. However, many organisations are worried about their brands being in the hands of others. Rather than fear this happening they should take the lead from National Rail and embrace the experimentation by working with the developers to produce inventive additional services for customers that are consistent with their brand’s look and feel. It’s really refreshing that a more traditional company like National Rail is competing with the likes of eBay in terms of customer experience, creativity and technical innovation.”

The gadget is written completely in Javascript and DHTML and utilises the Microsoft AJAX client library to keep the information up-to-date.
