Digital design agency Cimex has collaborated with the Institute of Physics (IOP) to redevelop – a website which aims to change the stereotypical perceptions of physics by showing the public how physics affects every aspect of life.

Creating a focused channel of communication with young people for their future development, Cimex has improved the design and accessibility of the IOP website, repurposing it to integrate learning and careers content from the learning physics site.

The Institute of Physics (IOP) is a membership organisation focused on promoting the understanding and application of physics, and supporting physicists. The IOP communicates with government, academia, industry, media and the general public, as well as its 34, 000 members.

The website portrays physics in an appealing way, breaking down stereotypes. In addition to inspiring young people, provides a searchable database of useful physics links, allowing users to explore particular topics in depth.

At the heart of the Cimex approach is a clear understanding of the target audience and stakeholders. Cimex undertook user testing during the development process restructuring the content and navigational interface to work for the different user requirements.

Because the site caters for users at a variety of life stages - with cross links to related relevant content - it is divided into four key areas meeting the need to explore, interact, study and find a career. The site contains the latest news and events, a member’s login and user commentary feature.

Cimex was responsible for the research, user testing, Information Architecture, design and build of the site.

Sam Rae, outreach officer at the IOP, said of the site, “Physics is an integral part of modern culture. It helps us to answer so many questions, from the mundane to the profound, and is one way to engage with them.”
