The latest roll out of the IMPACT Nominal Index (INI) police database has seen its use extended beyond the 43 forces in England and Wales, to include Scottish Forces, the Police Service of Northern Ireland, and British Transport Police.

Developed and run by the NPIA IMPACT Programme in collaboration with suppliers Cable & Wireless Europe, Asia & US and their developers WTG, for the first time the INI allows an officer in one force to quickly check whether any other force holds information on a person of interest. The further roll out gives police staff access to information held in the main operational systems of forces across the UK allowing them to find the information they need, when they need it.

The INI is already making a significant difference to the protection of children, helping the police service establish a fuller picture of suspects, make links to other investigations and ultimately safeguard the communities it serves. It was developed in response to Sir Michael Bichard's inquiry into the Soham murders and was first deployed in child abuse units in England and Wales in December 2005.

WTG were an integral part of the Cable & Wireless Europe, Asia & US supplier team working with NPIA IMPACT to design and implement the INI. The technical team developed the original internet based solution to integrate the data held by separate police forces across England and Wales into a single searchable application. Throughout the INI project, WTG through Cable and Wireless applied core capabilities and services in three areas; consultancy, development and operations

NPIA IMPACT Programme
Developed in response to Sir Michael Bichard’s inquiry into the Soham murder, the NPIA IMPACT Programme is improving the ability of the Police Service to manage and share operational information across force boundaries, helping prevent and detect crime and making communities safer.
