New Social Networking Site 'Poll The People' To Create First Evolving Global Poll of Greatest Albums, Films and Books

Glenn Cooper, former Head of Digital at Island Records is set to launch ‘Poll the People’ (www.pollthepeople.com) a social networking site with the aim to find the everyman’s greatest albums, films and books of all time, whilst bringing like-minded people together to share their tastes and recommendations through Top 5 Lists.

The site ,which was designed by digital creative marketing agency Hyperlaunch, is currently in Beta and due to officially launch in late April.

Launch partners for the site include Penguin Books, Transworld Publishers, Polydor, Mercury, Atlantic, Parlophone and Island Records. Nick Hornby the Godfather of Top 5s who popularized the concept in his best selling novel “Hi-Fidelity” is confirmed to provide his Top 5 lists for the official launch. During the Beta test phase, exclusive polls to promote Michael Jackson’s 25th anniversary ‘Thriller’ release and The Rolling Stones collaboration with Martin Scorsese on the ‘Shine A Light’ film soundtrack have run successfully.

Users create a profile and submit their top five albums, books and films with their choices counting towards the sites’ evolving Global Polls. The Polls are searchable by genre and link directly to the affiliate partner, Amazon, who provide the site’s product database. User’s Top 5s can be changed at any time which keeps them coming back to the site and ensures the Polls are an accurate barometer of current tastes.

The site also features a Research Extranet which enables multiple carves of the demographic information across all Polls to give a valuable insight into the specific tastes of targeted groups by gender / age / region / country.

The Brand strategy for 2008 includes plans to introduce “Poll The People Top 50 Rated” Retail stickers to drive CD / DVD / Book sales in Q4 and there is also interest in creating a TV show format.

Glenn Cooper comments, “Poll the People was borne out of frustration with the endless stream of magazine, TV and online polls where results were based on a very limited survey. I saw an opportunity to combine the global obsession with Polls and Top 5 list-making with the increasingly popular world of online communities to create a truly definitive survey based wholly on public opinion. Having worked with Hyperlaunch on a number of high-profile Island Record campaigns over the last 6 years, they were the natural partner to help me realise my vision for this exciting new site.”

Key Features of the site:
• View “Lists Like Mine” (where users have matched some or all of your Top 5 selections) and connect with like minded people in the community to discover new experiences and strike up new friendships.
• Invite like minded users to join Groups where they can blog about their favourite artists, films etc and create their own private polls.
• Search for an album, book or film and find all the users on the site who have featured it in their top five and view top rated lists as voted by the entire community
• Search for friends, rate their Top 5 choices, add them to your address book and send them Private Messages.
• Check out Celebrity Top 5s and discover what your favourite Celebs are into (Snow Patrol, Keane, Michael Eavis, Katherine Jenkins, Newton Faulkner etc already featured) Users can then click through to purchase their recommendations from Amazon.
• Select from a list of Future Polls that you’d like to see on the site or suggest new polls, eg – Greatest Footballers of all Time, Favourite Beauty products etc.
• Take part in the daily ‘People’s Poll’ which asks users for their opinion on current affairs. The News section also highlights recent entertainment news and encourages debate.
Jon Morgan, managing director at Hyperlaunch comments, “With ‘Poll the People’ we’re giving people the chance to define themselves through their music, film and book choices, whilst leveraging the power of online communities to create a truly democratic, ever-evolving list of the worlds’ favourite books, films and albums of all time.”
