London, 20th August, 2009: Adconion Media Group, the world’s largest independent online audience network, has become an official signatory of the Internet Advertising Bureau’s (IAB) Good Practice Principles.

Launched in March this year, the Good Practice Principles are the UK’s first self-regulatory guidelines governing the activities of online behavioural advertising companies. They aim to empower consumers and give them information and choices about behavioural advertising. Supported by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the independent data protection regulator, the principles constitute a common industry initiative dedicated to increasing consumer awareness and choice about the kind of advertising they receive.

The Good Practice Principles set out commitments to transparency, user choice and education. They complement current UK data protection laws with new practices relating to the collection and use of online data. Adconion will have six months to comply with three core commitments:

• Notice – a company collecting and using online data for behavioural advertising – such as a website publisher, ad network or technology company – must clearly inform a consumer that data is being collected and used for this purpose.
• Choice – a company collecting and using online data for behavioural advertising must provide a mechanism for users to decline behavioural advertising and where applicable seek a consumer’s consent (where data protection law or specific regulatory guidance applies).
• Education – a company collecting and using online data for behavioural advertising must provide consumers with clear and simple information about their use of data for this purpose and how users can decline.

Mike James, MD Adconion UK, says, “Adconion has always been committed to helping the online advertising industry become more transparent and open to the public. As such, we’re really excited to be a part of this new initiative to inform and educate consumers on what online behavioural advertising is all about.”

Nick Stringer, head of regulatory affairs at the IAB, adds, “We welcome Adconion’s addition to the list of companies signed up to the Good Practice Principles. The Principles demonstrate a commitment to being transparent and protecting consumer privacy. Moreover, they will help ensure that behavioural advertising delivers significant benefits to brands, as well as web publishers that provide innovative content to consumers for free or little cost.”
