Econsultancy and bigmouthmedia have today launched their first Social Media and Online PR survey, with companies invited to complete an online questionnaire in return for a free copy of the report.

The research is aimed at understanding the extent to which businesses are investing in social media, the tactics they are using and the issues which are holding them back.

Linus Gregoriadis, Research Director, said: “There is an enormous amount of interest from businesses in social media and online PR at the moment. The buzz is justified because there are tremendous opportunities for companies to benefit from investment.”

He added: “We believe that this research will be extremely useful for digital marketers and PR professionals who want to benchmark their organisations, and gain a greater understanding of the relevance of social media for their businesses.”

The research, sponsored by digital agency bigmouthmedia, covers strategies, budgets, resourcing and barriers to success. There is also a section on Twitter aimed at understanding what companies are using it for and how they are resourcing their activity.

David Hardy, bigmouthmedia group's international sales and marketing director, commented on the survey, saying: "We’re convinced of the power of social media, and while it has been difficult for brands to get their heads round it, we’re certainly seeing the tide turning. Social media is proving not to be not just a fad, but a channel which can give brands a place to engage with the people that live in social media spaces now. If a brand can’t keep up with that movement, it’s likely to get left behind.

“We’re delighted to be working with Econsultancy on this survey and we hope that it will give useful insights into the way businessesare using social media now.”

As usual, those who take part in the Econsultancy survey will get a free, advanced, copy of the report which will be published in October. The findings will also be presented at an event organised by bigmouthmedia.

The research follows Econsultancy’s Online PR Industry Benchmarking Report published in December 2008 which found that many organisations were struggling to understand, resource and measure online PR.

More than 300 UK marketers and PR professionals working for both in-house company teams and for agencies were surveyed to explore growth in the online PR industry and highlight the challenges that marketers currently face.
