Jo Murphy of What Jo Said was named Xchangeteam’s Editorial Freelancer of the Year with a high commendation overall at the end of March. The UK awards are dedicated to celebrating the work of freelancers in marketing, media and communications – sponsored by Creativepool and PRCA.

Jo’s award primarily recognises her contribution to www.portemagazine.com which she co-founded in January 2011 with Stadium Creative. Thanks to her PR planning, Porte featured in Design Week on the day of launch, achieved nearly 1,000 unique hits in its first month and will be included in the GDR Global Innovation Report in April 2011.

This is down to Porte’s fresh approach which stood out in an already crowded creative arena. Jo worked with Stadium’s initial brand concept to develop a tone of voice and online editorial strategy that was far reaching. She explained: “We wanted to build a community of people from all creative disciplines without alienating those not connected to the creative industries. This meant we didn’t have a target audience, so our content and approach needed to be engaging and accessible on all levels.”

Mike Fletcher, Contributing Editor, Haymarket Media Group, said: “Launching an editorially driven website from scratch within a one-month period is exceptional. Having the vision to determine tone of voice, accessibility and an editorial strategy within this time-frame is award winning. Choosing to pursue a freelance editorial career should allow the person the space to be creative and entrepreneurial. Jo has shown the passion and desire to take a concept and develop it into fully-functioning online magazine brand. A deserved winner – and I hope Porte Magazine continues to build on the momentum it has so quickly generated, allowing it to grow from strength to strength.”

Porte continues to attract high numbers of visitors and submissions for inclusion and has recently worked with the Crafts Council and Pulse Films – exceeding all expectations set by Stadium Creative.

Jo is currently working with BSI Group and Busby Knowledge Consultants as a web copywriter and brand and social media consultant.
