(5th May 2011) Full service digital agency Fortune Cookie has been called in by leading online travel agent, ebookers.com, to strengthen the company’s growing mobile services offering by creating a unique destination based iPad app.

The groundbreaking new ebookers Explorer app pulls together socially-generated content from across the internet, tailored to the destination the user is looking to explore, and delivers it in an easily digestible travel magazine format. Flickr photographs, YouTube videos, Twitter tweets, Google blog posts and hotel information from the ebookers website are combined, allowing users to access and share all the latest information about their chosen destination. Designed to increase consumer engagement in the research phase of the holiday process, the app is described as ‘a real travel magazine for real travellers’.

Justin Cooke, CEO of Fortune Cookie and chair of BIMA, said, ““This is the first social media travel guide application in the world. ebookers have always been a company which recognises the opportunities in digital, which is why we’ve helped them lead the way in harnessing content from the world's richest social media platforms and then delivering it in a beautifully crafted, familiar magazine format. Travel is all about experiencing the unexpected. This puts that in the palm of your hand”

Adam Bankin, Lead User Interface Architect on the project at Fortune Cookie said, “The new ebookers Explorer app gives users an exciting new way of researching locations and engaging with fellow travellers. As content is pulled directly from Flickr, YouTube and other social media channels, the user experience is different every visit, which keeps it fresh and means it remains aspirational no matter how many times you search “

ebookers’ Director of Product Strategy, Rob Define, is delighted with the result, “This is the first strategic project that we have partnered on with Fortune Cookie. Their understanding of the latest technologies and devices, user-centred design, ebookers’ proposition and the travel industry as a whole means we’ve been able to deliver a truly inspirational application. It meets our business goals and gives real travellers an exciting, unique offering which enables them to explore destinations and experiences like never before.”
