Full service independent digital agency, Lightmaker has developed Premier League footballer, Wayne Rooney’s first Official Website. Launched today it coincides with his first England game at the Euro 2012 Championships against the Ukraine on 19 June 2012.
Client Triple S Sports & Entertainment (Rooney’s Management Company) required a site to serve as a media hub for Rooney’s fan base, whilst also incorporating a commercial backdrop for his current principle sponsors, new ventures and future sponsorship opportunities. The sites primary objective is the consolidation of Rooney’s digital activity, serving as a portal for all his social media feeds including Twitter, Facebook and You Tube. Lightmaker’s brief was to create a media presence for Wayne Rooney, providing his fans with a great user experience and access to exclusive content, whilst ensuring the site is optimised for viewing across multiple platforms. Whether the user is on their smart phone at a match or at home on the desktop the experience remains the same.
The site has been built in PHP / Expression Engine for multiple browsers including IE9 (graceful degradation for IE8/IE7), Firefox, Chrome and Safari using responsive design techniques. Responsive design is a concept which essentially indicates that a web site is crafted to use W3C CSS3 media queries, with fluid proportion-based grids in order that it adapts the layout to the appropriate viewing environment. As a result, users across a broad range of devices and browsers will have access to a single source of content, laid out to be easy to read and navigate with a minimum of resizing, panning and scrolling. Use of the technique provides longevity of a websites design, as well as that all-important accessibility across multiple platforms – desktop, tablet and smart device.
It was essential that the site design maintained the integrity of the Wayne Rooney brand and his partnerships which include Manchester United, Nike and Harper Collins, whilst providing a great user experience for both consumer and commercial visitors alike. Lightmaker has achieved this effectively through the use of a clean yet structured aesthetic and progressive build techniques.
