15 January 2013, London – Econsultancy has today announced the 2012 online shopping survey, which looks into growth for the sector in both U.S. and U.K. markets.

It finds that delivery is a key factor for retailers, with 59% of UK shoppers saying they would not shop again with a retailer that failed to deliver on time.

The good news from the survey is that 87% of consumers received their orders when promised, but that does leave an unsatisfied minority.

Customers also want more choice on delivery – 24% of shoppers abandoned a potential purchase because a retailer didn’t provide convenient delivery options.

The survey has been collated and edited by Graham Charlton, Editor of the Econsultancy blog, who writes about all aspects of digital marketing, including mobile, ecommerce and SEO.

Charlton said: “The findings suggest that retailers need to pay attention to the quality of delivery services, and the variety of options provided. Customers demand fast and efficient delivery, and they also want convenience. Retailers who can provide this stand to gain an advantage other their competitors.”

The findings in the resulting report are displayed along with the original questions asked to survey respondents. Graphs depicting combined U.K. and U.S. responses, as well as U.K. only responses are provided next to the question sets.

Other findings include:
--U.K. consumers were more likely to have shopped mainly online this Christmas, compared with U.S. counterparts.

--40% of UK shoppers used reserve and collect services over Christmas, compared to just 17% of US consumers.

--24% of respondents used their smartphones or tablets for shopping over the Christmas period.

--21% used their mobiles to compare prices and check reviews when shopping in stores during the Christmas period.
