Portland has today announced the launch of simulo, a new solution that will allow companies to simulate a social media crisis. The new service designed by the communications agency’s digital team will allow clients to stress test their crisis plans in a contained and secure environment.

simulo uses innovative software to simulate an emerging crisis via a number of popular social media channels including Twitter, Facebook, blogs and online press articles. This is backed up by ‘real-life’ communications experts who role-play citizens, media and the community reactions in a realistic, real time scenario.

The scenarios and content are played out on replica digital and social media platforms held on a private network giving the exercise a real life feel.

Mark Flanagan, Partner of Portland’s Digital team, said: “There have been countless examples in recent years where major brands and organisations have been caught out by their inability to deal with a social media crisis. simulo will help companies prepare for a crisis, allowing them to stress test their crisis plans and ensuring they have the skills and tools in place to cope with any eventuality.”

As part of the simulation process, Portland conducts a full debrief of the exercise after it has concluded. This includes an analysis of the volume and tone of the company’s responses, response times and messaging used within the platform, and suggestions for improved crisis plans.

The software behind simulo has been developed in conjunction with Helpful Technology, a specialist engagement agency, run by Steph Gray, former Head of Digital Communications at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
