Reacting to news that education providers are struggling to equip learners with the skills required to meet the ever-growing demands of the technology sector, Box UK has revealed plans to extend their highly successful Masterclass format with a series of free interactive workshops focused on this specialised need.
Run by experienced members of the company’s award-winning team, the sessions have been tailored to support ICT and Computer Science professionals in the delivery of relevant, practical lessons while providing all learners with a valuable introduction to software development in a vibrant and stimulating environment.
Through this series Box UK hopes to help create a new generation of passionate and talented individuals excited by technology and inspired to learn more about software development, project management, user experience design, business analysis and other roles critical for the continued growth of the sector.
The initial Masterclasses for Education are focused on Software Development where, over the course of a two-hour workshop, Box UK’s Developers will work closely with small groups of learners to guide them through an appropriate microcosm of a real-world software project, from requirements capture through to coding, code review and issue tracking.
By the end of the session learners will have experienced the full software lifecycle and, across all age groups, gained an insight into the activities and processes used daily by industry-leading teams in real-world scenarios. For those individuals who may already be considering a career in software development, additional one-to-one tutoring provides tailored advice on how to achieve this goal.
Feedback from a pilot Masterclass for Education session held recently with six 11-year-old pupils from St David's Primary School, Torfaen has been extremely positive, with Headteacher John Healey commenting: "Working with the staff from Box UK will develop these pupils' confidence and inspire them to be active participants in making use of digital applications and developing their own learning approaches."
By extending the Masterclass series to directly target the education sector Box UK is furthering their commitment to supporting knowledge and skill sharing in the community. The sessions also complement the work of the Welsh Government steering group, jointly chaired by Box UK’s Head of Operations Stuart Arthur, who are helping guide the future direction of computer science and ICT learning in schools.
Speaking in response to the announcement Stuart said: "At Box UK we strongly believe in recruiting and nurturing emerging talent, and have been running Masterclasses to provide individuals with the opportunity to develop vital skills. By going back to grassroots and focusing on schools and education providers we are now able to help develop programming skills much earlier than would otherwise be possible and, by involving and supporting teachers too, can create a sustainable community capable of inspiring the next generation of skilled software developers necessary to support economic growth in the Welsh technology sector."
