The thousands of women around the country who pull on their trainers and pound the pavement each week can now get some extra inspiration and support with the launch of a brand new tool designed just for girls. The specialist running community, Running4Women.com has unveiled its handy running buddy finder. The free online service acts as a running matchmaker, helping women to find other runners near them who are looking for someone to train with.
Research in the US has found that 60% of all half-marathon runners are now women, and with results expected to be mirrored in the UK, women’s running is rapidly growing in popularity. Running4Women.com is a dedicated, female-focused community packed with informative guides, tips, routes, an iPhone app, challenges, logs and events designed to help women across the country to discover, or rediscover, a love of running.
Joanne, General Manager of Running4Women, says, “As much as we love running we know that sometimes, motivation can be hard to find. Our new buddy finder feature helps women to find other runners or running groups in their local area. Training is made a whole lot easier when there are one or more people giving encouragement and motivation. Running is not just a way to keep fit, it’s also as a great social activity which unites likeminded people through healthy exercise so the buddy finder is a great way to get started.”
Runners looking for someone to train with simply create a profile on the Running4Women site and add their town or city before opting in to the running buddy scheme. Users can then search for groups or individuals in their area who are also looking to be matched up with a local buddy or running group by specifying a search radius and viewing potential new buddies on a map or in a list format. From there, runners can add each other as friend, request to become part of a running group, or chat and arrange a time to start a regular buddy run.
Experienced runners can also use the buddy finder to start their own running group for their area; the groups can be searched by potential members and offer runners a regular time to meet up and train. Women can become Leaders, Coordinators and eventually Ambassadors of their own women’s running group; roles which require passion and commitment, but can ultimately be incredibly rewarding.
In addition to the new running buddy finder, Running4Women also has an innovative iPhone app for runners, which allows users to track their fitness activities and create their own training diary. The app uses GPS to track the route, speed and time of each run in order to create a detailed itinerary of progress over a training period. This helps women to track their personal bests, see which routes they perform the best on and determine how far away from their fitness goals they really are. The app can be integrated with a music app within the phone or device to crank up motivational songs for each session. Runs can also be shared on Facebook or Twitter, so friends and family can offer their support and see what progress has been made.
