Founded in 1676, Lock & Co. Hatters, the oldest hat shop in the world and steeped in tradition and heritage, were keen to create a more updated and modernised ecommerce site to provide their customers with a simple, enjoyable and easy to navigate online retail experience.

The brand, which has supplied hats to historical figures including Sir Winston Churchill, Oscar Wilde, Charles Chaplin and Admiral Lord Nelson and who holds 2 royal warrants for HRH Duke of Edinburgh and HRH Prince of Wales, wanted to showcase their extensive range of products online and continue to provide an exceptionally high level of customer service. Diligent was the agency chosen to fulfill this brief.

A key driver behind Lock & Co. Hatters decision to overhaul and update lockhatters.co.uk was to make the site more focused, cleaner and more customer-friendly as well as aiming to appeal to greater demographics and an international audience. Despite being the hatter for men, Lock & Co. Hatters needed also to focus their efforts on the women’s side of the business.

Diligent’s approach was to use the Magento Community ecommerce platform, which is without doubt the most flexible e-commerce solution on the market. It allowed Diligent to build bespoke features for Lock & Co. Hatters including an interactive care guide giving customers advice on how to look after their purchases, an animated timeline taking in over 339 years’ of history and a visual guide through the intricacies of choosing the correct size hat.

Magento also allowed for the introduction of several advanced ecommerce elements such as a predictive search, an account dashboard easily accessible from any page of the site, product images that automatically respond to customers’ colour selections and region dependent size options for every item.

lockhatters.co.uk now offers visitors a cleaner aesthetic with a bright full-screen landing page with improved product information throughout. The site is uncluttered, highlighting the strong imagery and emphasizing the curated content which can now breathe. This includes high-resolution close ups of each product, a comprehensive sizing guide and advice on how to care for hats. There are simple to shop product categories and the site has a good search functionality.

Lock & Co. Hatters continue to be leaders in their market place and are coveted all around the world because of their impeccably designed and superior quality hats. The site is fully responsive, rendering perfectly on all devices.
