Zone has acquired leading German digital agency conceptbakery as part of its ambitious growth strategy.

Already one of the largest independent agencies in the digital marketing sector, the acquisition will see Zone further enhance its ability to deliver for international clients across Europe.

conceptbakery, based in Cologne, has a strong reputation for content, social media and digital campaigns, and has a client list that includes SAB Miller, Fidelity Investments, RTL and Canon. Its 25-strong team will be led by conceptbakery co-founder Felix Holzapfel, who will become Zone’s CEO in Germany.

The acquisition also brings Zone an office in Denver, Colorado, where conceptbakery co-founder Klaus Holzapfel oversees a team servicing US-based clients.

The deal sees Zone forecasting a turnover of £20m in 2016 and brings its total number of staff to 220 strategy, content and technology experts based in London, Bristol, Cologne and Denver.

Zone’s bolstered presence in Europe will see the agency continue to build its offering to existing global clients such as Coca-Cola, Pernod Ricard and BNY Mellon alongside domestic business including BT, Barratt Homes, British Red Cross and Tesco.

The acquisition is Zone’s fifth in its 16-year history. Last year, the agency bought Conversion Science, a leading technology and software development consultancy, to further enhance its technology capabilities.

James Freedman, co-founder and executive chairman of Zone, said: “The acquisition of conceptbakery is another significant step in our ambitious growth plans. It brings us further expertise in Germany, which boasts Europe’s largest economy and a growing digital sector.

“Upscaling our presence there means we are even better able to deliver across Europe for leading global clients. By deploying agile teams that combine expertise in strategy, technology and content with a deep understanding of local markets we can help businesses thrive in a digital world.”

Zone CEO in Germany Felix Holzapfel said: “Digital transformation is critical for corporate success today and knows no borders. Many of our German and global customers are already active internationally or expanding. Now we can support them with even more international scale and expertise.”
