Digital Shift Q3 2014

By Econsultancy,

Digital Shift, a quarterly service from Econsultancy exclusively for Enterprise subscribers, is intended as a guide to support strategic thinking.

Focused tightly on digital technologies, marketing and ecommerce, it’s about delivering actionable insight on trends that will be significant in the short to mid-term, and which can be used to generate new ideas, improve business performance and stay ahead of the competition.

The sixth report in this series, also available as a presentation and webinar recording (see below), explores the most notable developments impacting digital marketing this quarter. The critical shifts are summarised below:

  • An operating system for everything?

This quarter we had the Google I/O and Apple WWDC conferences, both of which saw a raft of announcements focused on establishing Google or Apple respectively as the default operating system for not just PC and mobile, but also wearable technology, the connected home and even in-car services. The objective – creating a superior, unified experience across all of our connected devices.

  • The evolution of mobile apps

In the last Shift report we discussed the unbundling of Facebook into a series of connected apps and services. This quarter we saw more evidence of this strategy – not just at Facebook but also from other digital services and media owners.

  • Facebook, data and tracking

The backlash against Facebook’s manipulation of the newsfeed in the service of research has illustrated the strength of feeling some consumers have about this area, and that with great data, comes great responsibility.

  • Social commerce

There have been more examples of transaction opportunities opening up in social environments this quarter with some interesting moves and a potential game changer.

  • Organisational agility

The rapid pace of change in consumer behaviour, technological impact and competitive context that most companies face means that organisational agility has never been more important. How are ‘digitally native’ companies organising for this new world?
