Tipped, a new site launched last week, provides people with the chance to view and share tips on the best places in their local areas, from bars and restaurants to shops and hotels.
Tipped provides listings for more than 50 towns and cities throughout the UK, and its users can provide their own reviews of places they have visited, or search through the directory for reviews of nightspots, hotels etc in their local area.
It is also a social network – users can upload their own pictures, create profiles, as well as connecting with other reviewers and keep up with tips from friends and contacts.
Other users can say whether or not your tips have been useful, and over time this can enhance your reputation as a reviewer on the site.
Having only launched last week, the reviews on the site mainly cover London, but it could build itself into a valuable resource if enough people start to use the site and leave their own reviews.
One unique selling point for this kind of site is that it has been designed with mobile users in mind. It has been optimised for mobile, and reviews can also be sent to your mobile, complete with a Google map of the venue. which could be very useful when on the move and looking for a place to go.
The site looks good, and is nice and easy to use – descriptions of the various bars, restaurants etc are accompanied by contact info, pictures and transport info, and the location is shown via Google Maps.
There is some competition in this area – welovelocal, for instance, which launched earlier this year, provides reviews and listings of local bars/restaurants, as well as having a similar social network element, though it doesn’t have the same mobile access.
Tipped, which is based in London, was founded by Joel Brazil, ex-head of mobile for Microsoft UK’s online services group, and the site has already attracted around 4,000 unique users through beta testing and word of mouth.
