Downloading speeds and reliability are holding back uptake of video on demand services, according to a new survey.
The survey, commissioned by content delivery network provider CacheLogic and carried out by YouGov, asked 2,400 UK adults about their attitudes to online VOD.
The survey found that:
- Only 15% of UK internet users have downloaded a full length TV programme, while just 14% have downloaded a whole movie.
- The most common complaints concerned download speeds and reliability.
- 65% of respondents said they would be fairly or very interested in using a video on demand service that was reliable and offered fast download speeds. Just 13% were uninterested in such a service.
Andrew Parker of CacheLogic believes that the findings challenge the view that take up of VOD services is dependent on integration with TV sets, as with BT Vision.
It may be that internet users are interested in downloading films and TV shows online, though whether they would prefer to watch through their TV sets is unclear, as the question was not asked.
In the case of online VOD services such as 4oD, download speeds are a drawback. It can take up to 45 minutes to download a 30 minute TV show, which is off-putting when you can get the programme instantly through some cable TV services.
