We’d all like to produce videos that convey our complicated product or brand but don’t cost the Earth. Without a background in rich media, it’s time consuming to create a animated video or shoot and edit your own footage.

Moovly aims to make this easier and allows the easy creation of simple animated videos. I spoke to the team to find out more about the service.

In one sentence, what is your product/service?

Moovly is an online SaaS (software as a service) platform that allows users to make animated videos, banners, presentations and explainers, by dragging and dropping pre-animated animations, adjusting these in the timeline and adding text. It makes multimedia content creation easy. 

What problem(s) does it solve?

It democratizes the way animation is made. You don’t need to be an expert. Everyone can choose out of a big library of animations, drag and drop these on a timeline and create animated videos, banners or presentations. It also allows to easily adapt these in the future.

So there is no need to ask third parties to create very expensive animations. And if someone does want professional work, he/she can ask to make it in Moovly, so they can easily adapt it in the future without having to go back to the agency. For example to translate texts, change some dates, etc.

What are your immediate goals?

The goals are to have a lot of traction, that people start using it. Moovly wants to be the standard in animation.

What were the biggest challenges involved in building the tech or your team?

There is a big roadmap with a lot of improvements and the difficulty is to choose the timing. Not all the features can be done at once. The team is not as big as it hopefully will be in the future.

How will the company make money?

There will be a free entry level license and for those who want more there are paid licenses with more features and more animated objects to choose from. Also the free user can choose to buy a one off feature or animation.

And there is also a Marketplace that will be further improved in the future, where freelancers can offer their services for voice over, storyboard writing or making personalized animated objects such as logos.

Today we have: 

  • Geert Coppens, evangelist, operations and engineering.
  • Brendon Grunewald, strategy, finance and investor relations.
  • Thierry Moubax, sales and marketing.
  • Bram Van der Sype, back end and infrastructure development.
  • Jan Jorissen, front end and application development.
  • Wouter De Winter, senior animator/multimedia designer.

But this will definitely increase in the coming weeks and months!

Where would you like to be in one, three and five years’ time?

We would like to be a standard in the animation world with millions of users.

Other than your own, what are your favourite websites/apps/tools?

We use different tools like Dropbox, Spotify or Evernote which are in a way similar business models to our own.
