Run by three former executives from mydeco, tribesports is a social network and recommendation engine for sports lovers.

We’ve been talking to tribesports Co-founder David Hickson about the company…

In one sentence, what is tribesports?

The social network for sports people.

What problems does tribesports solve?

The problem of finding sports tips, advice and motivation online through the morass of SEO pumped how-to guides with no social curation or engagement and outdated forum or publisher-led sites that focus on the sports not the sports people.

The problem of there not being a single, turnkey, global platform for sports people to connect, do more and express themselves as sports people.

When and why did you launch it?

After being in private beta since the start of the year we launched into open beta on 9 June 2011.

What are your immediate goals?

To make our webapp as useful as possible and then to build our mobile app(s) in a way that is both a complementary adjunct and an enhancement to the platform.

What were the biggest challenges involved in building tribesports?

Getting our first product as right as it can be. Ours is a product that presses a lot of levers, be they social, interactive or tech; in this space it’s the sum of the pressed levers (and then them working in the right way) that will lead to success.

How is the company funded?

Angel and private individuals.

How will the company make money?

Our users love to define themselves as sports people by lots of things: their achievements, their challenges, their knowledge… and by their equipment.

Imagine having a Tripadvisor for sports equipment, but you know the credentials of the reviewer – that’s brilliant for our members, people looking for great advice and for the retailer… and a great affiliate marketing model.

Integrated sponsorship and targeted advertising.

Who is in the team and what does it look like?

We are eight in total, plus two interns.

Co-founders are Steve Reid – CEO (ex mydeco), David Hickson – CSO (, Jenna Anians – Commercial Director (ex-mydeco) and Andrew McDonough – CTO (ex sportscentric/Unboxed )

Where would you like to be in one, three and five year’s time?

In one year: a multi-platform product suite, global with 1m users.

Three years: the definitive holder of the sports-interest graph.

Five years: IPO.
