Digital publishers fall back to earth

The digital publishing industry was hit with a surprise late last week as reports broke indicating that digital media darling Mashable was sold to Ziff Davis for just $50m.

That’s a small fraction of the $250m investors had valued the company at in its most recent funding round last year.

A brand that loves you: How Buzzfeed uses empathy to connect with its audience

If you try to think of a celebrity who is humble and shows empathy towards their fans, Snoop Dogg is perhaps not the most obvious example that springs to mind.

Buzzfeed: The art and science of social video

On Tuesday I ventured into Google’s London office to hear a number of talks about online video and its increasing importance as a digital marketing tool (while stuffing my face with sushi).

The ultimate NewFronts roundup

Buzzfeed: brand relevance in the social web

Buzzfeed has certainly arrived at the right place at the right time, taking advantage of an increasingly social web and curating a huge proportion of the content we see everyday in our news feeds.

Buzzfeed has more than 150m unique views every month, 15m unique views in the UK with 75% of these coming from social and more than half coming from mobile.

The creative director of Buzzfeed Philip Byrne talked at our Festival of Marketing event yesterday about the success of Buzzfeed and also gave advice for brands that want to partner with the publisher.

Stats: How happy are our social networks?

The latest update to Econsultancy’s Internet Statistics Compendium sees the usual batch of hand-picked data gems.

This month, the Social Media sub-report of the compendium saw some particularly interesting stats about engagement (from SocialFlow), how US Fortune 500 companies are using social networks and blogs (Umass) and research which will likely be of interest to businesses and household web-users alike released in August by Fractl.

30 things I love on mobile websites

I’ve been trawling through some mobile sites to find features I like.

Previously I published probably my favourite 15 mobile features but here’s 30 more I like to see on the smaller screen.

As ever, check out the Econsultancy Mobile Web Design and Development Best Practice Guide for more guidance and come to the Festival of Marketing in London, November 12-13th, to learn more.

Right, let’s get stuck in with the screenshots!
