Has NoSQL been overhyped?

One of the biggest technology buzzwords to emerge in the past several years is ‘NoSQL.‘ Put simply, NoSQL has come to refer to any database management system that isn’t a traditional RDBMB.

From Cassandra to CouchDB, there are a number of NoSQL systems that have attracted significant attention, and that are used in commercial applications, including some of the most popular consumer internet services.

But the honeymoon with NoSQL may be coming to an end.

Is gamification bulls!*t?

Every year, digital marketers are delivered a fresh collection of new buzzwords, and one of the hottest in recent memory is ‘gamification.’

Gamification, defined simply, is the addition of ‘game mechanics‘ to a service. The rationale behind gamification is equally simple: by adding gaming components to a service, its operator can make the service as addictive as, say, Farmville.

Group buying has jumped the shark

Could Groupon be an $8bn a year business? How about a $25bn a year
business? Sound crazy? It’s not — at least to a number of observers,
including TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington and TrialPay CEO Alex Rampell.

Group buying is already one of the hottest markets on the internet right
now, and if people like Arrington and Rampell are correct, it could be
one of the largest markets on the internet in short order. No wonder there are rumors about a billion-dollar acquisition of Groupon.
