Should brands be worried about the possible repeal of net neutrality rules?

The potential repeal of the 2015 net neutrality rules that were implemented in the U.S. by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has sparked an outcry from consumers, consumer rights groups, businesses and trade organizations.

Under a proposal unveiled last week, ISPs would, among other things, no longer be banned from charging companies to prioritize the delivery of their content or restricting access to particular online services that utilize significant resources.

What is net neutrality and how does its latest setback affect marketers?

Net neutrality, or challenges to it, hit the news again last week when a US federal appeals court took the side of Verizon and ruled against parts of the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC’s) net neutrality rules. 

I thought I’d take the opportunity to detail what net neutrality is, what the arguments for and against are, how it has been flouted in the past and what this latest ruling could mean for the internet and marketers in particular.

SOPA blackouts to go on, even if bill is dead (for now)

Parts of the internet will go black tomorrow. From Wikipedia and Reddit to the Cheezburger network and Major League Gaming, numerous highly-trafficked web properties say they’ll shut down to protest the SOPA legislation that would make the internet far less free in the name of fighting piracy.

Even Google is going to be making a statement using its homepage.

The blackouts are going on despite the fact that SOPA is effectively dead — for the time being.
