Walmart Marketplace

Major retailers ditch the Amazon Marketplace

Amazon is online retail’s 800 pound gorilla, but even so, it has tried to play nicely with others. One of the ways it has done that is with the Amazon Marketplace, which allows third parties to sell through its site.

The Marketplace accounted for over 30% of Amazon.com’s unit sales in Q4 2010, and has helped fuel at least some of Amazon.com’s continued impressive growth.

Walmart takes a page from Amazon.com’s playbook

Amazon.com may be the king of online retail but the king of offline retail, Wal-Mart, may have Amazon.com’s throne on its mind. Yesterday, Walmart.com added one million new items to its catalog thanks to the launch of the Walmart Marketplace.

What is the Walmart Marketplace? As the name suggests, it’s the Walmart equivalent of the Amazon Marketplace, a program that enables third party merchants to hawk their wares on Amazon.com.
