How Zara is using in-store tech to improve its frustrating shopper experience

Last year, a particularly frustrating experience in Zara’s Oxford Street store lead me to write this article, praising retailers who – in contrast to the Spanish retailer – typically excel when it comes to their in-store customer experience.

Since that time, it appears Zara has undergone quite a few changes, largely through an increased investment and focus on technology.

Just ask Japanese clothing retailer Uniqlo, which found itself in the spotlight after a mobile phone video showing an amorous couple getting to know each other in a Beijing store’s fitting room was distributed online.

Nine excellent retail apps that help to foster customer loyalty

Conversion rates from mobile commerce remain extremely low when compared with desktop and tablet, as people often prefer to use smartphones for research rather than purchases.

However, I’ve recently come across data which shows that smartphone apps are an exception to this rule, and in fact convert at a rate that’s closer to desktop than the mobile web.

Data from mobile commerce platform Poq Studio shows that in November and December 2013 conversion rates from smartphone apps was 1.8% compared to 2.4% on desktop and 0.73% on the mobile web. 

This is indicative of the fact that mobile apps are generally used by loyal customers, as the data also shows that 78% of apps users were return visitors, compared to 40% on mobile sites.

Furthermore, former ASOS director James Hart previously stated that the company’s apps saw a “much higher” conversion rate than the mobile web.

Zara’s mobile apps don’t work

Zara finally launched online in the UK this month, but it also recently updated its mobile presence, and now offers transactional apps for the iPhone and iPad. 

I looked at the previous Zara iPhone app in January and it was pretty useless, with just a few product pictures, with no prices, and not even a store locator tool. 

I’ve been trying out the iPhone and iPad apps so see if Zara has improved its mobile offering, but have found plenty of issues with both…
