Technorati has announced a major revamp of its site, shifting its focus from blog searches to video content, photos, podcasts and music.

The homepage has been simplified, with the various search options replaced by a singe search box at the top of the screen.

It returns results from various media types, though you can refine your search and just look for blog content, photos or video.

For users who prefer just to search through blogs, there is a streamlined homepage which for those who want to search for blogs and nothing else.

Technorati CEO Dave Sifry explains the change of emphasis on his blog:

“Whereas folks using Technorati a couple of years ago were predominantly coming to us to search the blogosphere, today they are increasingly coming to our site to get the 360 degree context of the Live Web – blogs of course, but also user-generated video, photos, podcasts, music, games and more.”

The redesign, alongside recent changes to blog profile pages, is a big improvement, though there is still a problem with ‘splogs’ (spam blogs) in some searches.

The recent impressive growth in user numbers is continuing, according to Sifry. In a recent post, which prompted speculation that the site was looking for a buyer, he announced that Technorati had 9m users in March this year, compared with 3.5m in January. The figure for April was 11.7m.
