Users of LinkedIn can now add photos to their profile pages, while users of German business network Xing will be able to add more personal and professional information to their profiles.
LinkedIn has resisted this move for some time as the lack of photos has set the site apart from other social networks, but has decided to give in to user requests.
The profile photos are meant to be professional headshots, while users can prevent others from viewing their photos if they prefer.
Meanwhile, Xing will now allow users to add links to let others see their online profiles on other sites, such as Flickr, YouTube or Digg. In addition, users can now add more personal and professional information in their profiles.
Xing, which started off in the German speaking world, and has recently expanded into Spain, passed the 4m member mark this month, while LinkedIn had around 11m members.
